John Mechling is a senior principal engineer with more than 40 years of experience in mountain development and construction, with particular expertise in ski area development and construction.

 

John joined CTL | Thompson in 1978 as a field technician and later served as staff engineer. In 1987, John launched CTL’s Glenwood Springs Division. He served as branch manager for many years, overseeing engineering consultation while contributing to the overall management and growth of the company. He provided geotechnical engineering reports for commercial, residential and industrial projects and supervised the quality assurance of testing of soils, asphalt and concrete. In 2017, John passed the baton to his successor, but he continues to provide guidance as a senior principal engineer.

His extensive experience includes slope stability analysis, dewatering and earth retention system design for ski area base development at Aspen, Aspen Highlands and Crested Butte, Colorado, and Big Sky, Montana.

Notable Projects/Accomplishments:

  • Founded CTL’s Glenwood Springs Division

  • Geologic/geologic hazard and geotechnical engineer consultant for ski area development, including ski lifts and snowmaking facilities and all lodge, multi-family and single-family construction at Big Sky, Spanish Peaks, Moonlight Basin, and in Gallatin and Madison Counties, Montana, with evaluation of landslides and potentially unstable terrain

  • Expert witness in construction defect cases and geotechnical engineering consultation related to ski area development
